Air Force officials announced Thursday that Major General Richard Webber, currently an assistant deputy chief at Air Force Headquarters will oversee the new cybersecurity and defense command at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.  The command will employ around 400 people and will focus on defending Air Force networks against infiltration.

Webber, a veteran Air Force officer with over 34 years of service, currently works as assistant deputy chief for Air, Space and Information Operations, overseeing requirements and training. He is also a qualified command space and missile operator.

Air force officials announced that the new command would be based at Lackland two weeks ago, pending environmental assessment.  The new command will operate under Major General William T. Lord, head of Air Force Space Command.

It’s disappointing that a Space and Missile Officer was promoted to this post. A Communications and Informations Officer would have been a much better choice.
