Marine Corps Bans Twitter, Facebook, MySpace
Popular social networking sites including Twitter, MySpace and Facebook are banned from the U.S. Marine Corps for the next year, effective immediately. Other military branches are considering a similar ban.
The Marine Corps cited potential security breaches of government computers and malware attacks for the ban. Popular social networking sites have an increased potential for phising and malware attacks, a risk Marine officials are unwilling to take. However, internal networking programs within the U.S. Marine Coprs will continue to be available.
“These internet sites in general are a proven haven for malicious actors and content and are particularly high risk due to information exposure, user generated content and targeting by adversaries,” the Marine Corps order reads.
The announcement comes as the Department of Defense continues to work towards the completion of its new website homepage. The website design currently includes many interactive media tools, according to a wired.com article. Many soldiers blog from the battlefields to family back home as well.
