NIST to Reorganize IT Lab for Enhanced Cybersecurity Research
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has started reorganizing its Information Technology Laboratory, aiming to enhance NIST cybersecurity research.
After the reorganization, NIST’s chief cybersecurity adviser, Curt Barker, (also its Computer Security Division cheif) will relocate to the IT Laboratory office, while continuing to oversee the Computer Security Division. The IT Laboratory organization chart already shows Barker in the ITL office, because he serves as the cybersecurity and privacy coordinator for the Department of Commerce, where NIST is housed.
NIST believes that placing the chief cybersecurity adviser in the IT Laboratory office would encourage more interdisciplinary collaboration with other NIST research units to develop improved cybersecurity programs and guidance. Cita Furlani, director of NIST’s IT Laboratory, said of the reorganization ”Cybersecurity is a vital, central mission of our laboratory. Our programs must fully reflect the complex interdisciplinary nature of today’s threats. Any changes ultimately made to management of our cybersecurity programs will be carefully designed to significantly improve and reinforce protection of the nation’s information technology resources.”
