Australia Considers Cyber Czar Model
Following the recent creation of the “cyber czar” post by the Obama administration, Australia is looking to the United States for feasible upgrades to its own cybersecurity.
The need for a centralized authority to facilitate better security protocols throughout Australia’s critical infrastructure has been highlighted by a number of cyber attacks in Australia against the government.
The Prime Minister’s website was subjected to a distributed denial of service attack in early September. Cyber investigation units were recently hacked after arresting and taunting a number of hackers in a forum. The global CIO for Symantec recently advocated for Australia to copy a number of the cyber reforms the United States is pursuing, particularly the creation of a cyber czar post and placing the protection of cyberspace a critical mission for national security. Other technology corporations with business in Australia are also pressing the government for increased protective efforts in cyberspace.
