National Archives Facilitated Data Breach?
The National Archives and Records Administration may have sent out a disk with confidential information on 70 million veterans, and the incident has been referred to the inspector general for investigation.
A defective hard drive was allegedly sent back to the vendor for repair without being wiped of data.
An IT professional at NARA believes the data breach is indicative of poor security awareness at NARA, according to Wired.com. However, sources at NARA claim there is no cause for concern as the vendor signed confidentiality agreements as part of its contracts.
The drive was used to process veterans’ requests for copies of their health and service records.
