Combating Cyber Crime in South East Asia

In the ever expanding realm of cyber security, both India and New Zealand have moved to strengthen their cyber security efforts. New Zealand established a small cyber crime police unit and India has established a court to hear cases involving cyber crime.

The small cyber unit set up in New Zealand, known as the National Cyber Crime Centre, looks to be operational by the end of 2009. The unit is tasked with hunting for cyber crime on the internet, serving as a reporting repository for instances of cyber crime and tracking the dollar amount, frequency and variety of cyber scams, along with providing training to local units and working with the international community.

The Cyber Appellate Tribunal, which will be based in Bangalore, is to hear cyber crime cases for all of southern India. The court is meant to ensure that victims of cyber crime have a legal outlet to pursue perpetrators.
