Navy CIO Outlines Strategies

Robert Carey, the Navy’s CIO, outlined some of the key concepts and strategies for Navy cyber/IT on his blog. He believes that these six areas are significant opportunities that the Navy should work to implement.

Carey’s first strategy is to ensure that the Navy embraces new technologies as they become available. Carey said “we must be able to embrace change and ensure that our organizational leaders are ready to make use of IT in support of DON mission.” Also, the Department of the Navy must move fully into the information age, exploiting the benefits of information sharing and collaboration. Carey also believes that the Navy needs to embrace social media to facilitate collaboration. He also called for the cyber/IT force of the Navy to lead in combining needed security protocols with necessary access to information. Also, he looks to move towards a greener model and facilitate individuals working remotely. Finally, he considers the training of the next generation of cyber professionals to be absolutely vital.
