Police in the United Kingdom have arrested a couple in Manchester for using Trojan software to commit bank fraud. The couple were arrested by the Central e-Crime Unit and are suspected of violating the 2006 Fraud Act and 1990 Computer Misuse Act.
The pair of suspected of having used the infamous Zeus Trojan to commit the fraud. This is the first arrest of anyone in Europe for using malware. Colin Wetherill, Detective Inspector at the Central e-Crime Unit, said “The ZeuS Trojan is a piece of malware used increasingly by criminals to obtain huge quantities of sensitive information from thousands of compromised computers around the world. The arrests represent a considerable breakthrough in our increasing efforts to combat online criminality.”
The couple, both twenty years old, were questioned by police following their arrest and have been released on bail.
