Leading the way in Identity Management

A robust identity management solution is capable of authenticating users without requiring the byzantine collection of logins we all have to access the array of web-based applications, information sites or even access our networks at home. The ‘forgot my login’ feature on every site suggests strongly to us that we are not the only ones that have trouble remembering each password and user name combination. These many problems are a leading cause of  poor security practices.   We know there must be a better way to personalize account security than relying on the same password, written down passwords or our pet’s name.

Members of the government and private sector are seeking solutions to this problem. How do you authenticate a user who is accessing the system and how can you make a system with robust security that does not require a string of new passwords and user names? Identity management solutions are the answer.

As more government users are heading outside the traditional network to conduct business, federal agencies are looking for solutions to the problem of identity management. Robert Carey, the Navy’s CIO, discussed the issue earlier this year in his monthly blog. He was looking for ways to ensure a more robust identity management system to facilitate collaboration.

While the government seeks better identity management solutions, below are some of the leading providers of identity management services:

Oracle : provide a host of services and products, including ones that address administration, access control, detection and authentication

Quest Software : provides access, authentication, administration and compliance solutions

Qwest : provides government security and identification management solutions to assist federal agencies

With the coming of biometric and other advanced forms of identification, IT security is also moving forward with the help of these companies.

This list of leading solutions does not seem complete.
My agency conducted a study and tested some solutions and is now conductinga pilot where we have been able to significantly reduce the nuber of passwords required by end-users and administrators.
