BitDefense Top Security Predictions of 2010
In a study released yesterday, Botnets, malicious applications and social networking malware top the future threats of 2010. In a study released by BitDefender, cyber criminals will be looking to expanding platforms, target multiple operating systems and mobile devices.
“2009 saw a wide range of security threats aiming at both end-users and at corporate networks,” said Catalin Cosoi, BitDefender’s senior anti-spam researcher. “The Conficker worm took a dramatic surge and managed to stay one of the top three global threats during 2009. Although not entirely dangerous, its spreading mechanisms and its resistance to detection may be regarded as the cornerstone of the upcoming breeds of highly-destructive malware.”
The predictions for 2010 include:
Botnet Activity
Malicious Applications
Social Networking
Operating Systems
Mobile Operating Systems
Enterprise Threats
Netbook and PDA threats
“Computer users need to keep in mind that cyber criminals are constantly adapting their e-threats so they don’t get caught, making them more damaging,” said Cosoi. “With that being said, it is essential for home users, small businesses and enterprises alike to have a reliable security solution installed and updated on their systems.”
Along with their predictions, they urge Apple and MacOS users to anticipate seeing more viruses and other malware. Users are urged to adopt better security practices. Even more than the threat to Apple users is the possibility of social networking attacks. Google Chrome and Wave are anticipating more threats as well as sites such as Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn.
As far as mobile devices the threat level for devices is congruous with their popularity. Phones such as Android and Maemo are not expected to see the same intensity of attacks as the iPhone.
