DHS to Outsource Cyber Education
The Department of Homeland Security has selected the National Cyber Security Alliance to help the department disseminate information regarding cyber security to the general public, according to an announcement on FedBizOpps.
NCSA will “support the efforts of the department’s national cybersecurity division to nationally promote cybersecurity awareness to empower citizens to use the Internet securely and safely, while protecting themselves, and the cyber infrastructure.”
The initiative will target the majority of the private sector, including home users, small and medium-sized business (traditionally a prime target for cyber crime), students, teachers and administrators. NCSA recently supported “National Cyber Security Awareness Month’ in October 2009, with the theme of ‘our shared responsibility.”
Michael Kaiser, executive director of NCSA, spoke in October of the need for a “Smokey the Bear” figure for cybersecurity. The majority of cyber breaches are a result of human error, often by individuals not properly updating software or clicking on suspicious links. Most instances of identity theft involve victims actively giving information to cyber criminals posing as legitimate business people.
