Police Get Help Combating Cyber Crime in India
Police in India will be aided by private cyber security experts and Indian IT companies in combating cyber crime, according to a report on IndianExpress.com. The collaborative effort to combat cyber crime, including identity theft and the stealing of intellectual property, looks to combine the expertise and skills of the private sector with the enforcement capabilities of the police.
The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) will set up a series of Cyber Labs in various cities throughout India. Private companies in India are willing to help police tackle the issue of cyber crime but are often unclear how to go about supporting the effort. The creation of the Cyber Labs is meant to address that problem.
Prathap Reddy, an IPS officer serving as an advisor to NASSCOM, said “We need a quantum leap on the Cyber Lab model that trains around 3000 people on cyber security every year. We need a virtual group of experts like the US NCFTA. A group that collects and shares knowledge on facets of cyber crime.”
Police in India are having difficulty prosecuting suspects however. Since 2000 in Karnataka, only 65 cases have been filed against suspects, despite the recording of over 300 incidents.
