McAfee and Facebook are partnering to battle cyber crime, using McAfee’s security solutions and Facebook’s broad membership to make security solutions available to more than 350 million Internet users.
The collaboration will include security solutions such as McAfee’s software, a customized scanning and repair tool and education materials, all of which will be available to Facebook users.
Under the agreement, McAfee will serve as Facebook’s sole provider of consumer security software. McAfee Internet Security Suite software will be made available for a 6 month trial period free of charge to all Facebook users. Following the trial period, Facebook users will be able to purchase the McAfee product at a reduced price.
Additionally, in cases of Facebook accounts being compromised, Facebook will require the infected user to re-secure their account and learn best security practices. This process will include the use of McAfee custom software to clean infected user’s accounts and computers, free of charge.
McAfee and Facebook will also develop educational materials to be placed on the Facebook Security Page and McAfee will provide consistent updates to its Facebook page. Todd Gebhart, executive vice president and general manager, McAfee Consumer, Mobile and Small Business, said, “We believe our partnership will make a real difference in the battle to secure the Internet by giving so many more people access to industry leading technology from McAfee.”
McAfee was selected by Facebook following a review process of leading security providers. Elliot Schrage, vice president of global communications, marketing and public policy, Facebook, said:
“Keeping the Internet secure requires that users, security vendors and Internet companies all work together. We think we’ve developed an excellent model for this collaboration, and to ensure the greatest possible value to our users, Facebook will not accept any revenue from subscriptions. We hope this is something that other services will emulate.”
