Infection by Social Networking
The past year has seen a sharp increase in cyber attacks against social networking users according to a report released by Sophos. Users of social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook have experienced a 70 percent increase in spam and malware attacks in the past year.
Within the past year, close to 60 percent of users of social networking sites have experienced spam attacks and close to 40 percent have been targeted by malware. Despite the increase in attacks in 2009, more companies (almost 50 percent) now allow employees unrestricted access to Facebook, a popular social networking site.
“The dramatic rise in attacks in the last year tells us that social networks and their millions of users have to do more to protect themselves from organised cybercrime,” said Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant with Sophos.
