Cyber Scammers Beware, the British are Coming

The British government has launched a counter cyber scam team and plans to invest 4.3 million pounds within the next three years to combat cyber scams. Online scams, usually initiated via email, currently hit 3 million victims in the UK per year for a total loss of 3.5 billion pounds, according to an article on TheRegister.co.uk.

The new team will predominately focus on scam websites and online ticket scams which promise goods or services that are never delivered, targeting the most serious cyber scams. The large scale investment will be used to establish local computer labs and train and deploy trading standards enforcers throughout England, Scotland and Wales.

“Our investment will help the OFT and Trading Standards to put in place the new specialist teams, training and technology required to take the fight to these criminals,” said Consumer Minister Kevin Brennan.

Police, the Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) and other agencies will still handle the majority of cyber crime cases.

The UK government previously stood up the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau and the National Fraud Reporting Centre. The metropolitan police have also stood up a Police Central eCrime Unit.
