Over 60 Sites Compromised with SEO Poisoning

Recently, an additional 60 sites have been found to host SEO poisoning activity. SEO attacks have been increasing with people primarily using Google to point searchers to infected domains. These other sites launch malware, phishing attacks and IFrame SEO attacks.  Topics are broad ranging and often connected. Criminals also use well researched terms to place infected domains.

One of the major problems with SEO Poisoning is that for each infected website, hundred of search terms could yield the resulted infected website. It is a highly effective way of disseminating malicious code, malware and many other forms of cyber crime. When a search engine user types a particular search term that matches one of similar to a compromised sites, the search results will be full of malicious links. Unlike before where there are only a few infected links, there are more than 60 this time, and a majority in the top 10.

With the newest batch of websites discovered the topics in one domain overlap with that of the other domain. This makes it more  possible that they will both emerge in the search results. Topics range from the  Olympics Theme Song to Winter Olympics Luge Crash to the death of Alexander McQueen

One a user clicks a link, it opens a dialogue box asking to run the program and it will pretend to scan you system. By clicking Accept, the infected software is placed on the users computer. The entire attack masquerades as a security feature.
