Cleaning Botnets the Japanese Way
Botnets are an increasing problem in the Internet community and will likely become even more problematic once Africa (reputed to have the largest number of infected computers) gets widespread access to broadband. The Japanese have taken an interesting approach to combating botnets, networks of infected computers that can be controlled remotely for nefarious purposes, working with ISPs in an attempt to clean computers that become infected.
The Cyber Clean Center in Japan (CCC), an effort of the Japanese Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center (JP-CERT), works with 76 Japanese ISPs (who provide service for around 90 percent of Japanese Internet users) to detect and clean up botnets. When an infected PC is detected, the ISP will send the user and email or letter in the mail telling the customer to go to the CCC website and download a cleaning tool to remove the infection.
