Cyber Hack Causes School Lockdown

Schools in Minneapolis were the victims of a cyber attack earlier this week that was traced to Australia. According to the Star Tribune, a computer program was activated at the school that sent out messages to the parents of the school’s 32,000 students saying that, due to an emergency situation, the schools would be locked down.

The hacker who sent the message initiating the first school lock down in Minneapolis’ history also used the Internet to warn that a school would be attacked by gunmen. The message regarding the lock down was followed up with a later message claiming the lock down was extended to Thursday morning.

While the technology used by the cyber miscreant was not perfect, it managed to cause significant levels of fear and panic with parents. Some parents only received partial messages, heightening their concern.

Please. A hacker in Australia has no interest in a school in Minneapolis. This was quite obviously one of the schools own students using an open proxy server in Australia to attempt hiding his identity. When you want to solve a crime like this, think to your self ‘Who stands to benefit?’. That answer should be self evident.. The student who wants to get out of class, that’s who. No one else really cares. Scan the IP of the computer is Australia where the attacks supposedly came from and my bet is five to one that it will contain an open proxy. Maybe I’ll call this school and offer up my net-sleuth services. Then again, maybe not.
