Research Looks to Remove Mysticism from DDoS
Researchers at Team Cymru, an Internet security research organization, is publishing a four part series that looks to explain how and why distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks occur. While larger companies, particularly ISPs are able to access reports from larger monitoring firms, smaller businesses do not have a source for information, which is the gap that Team Cymru’s reports hope to fill.
The reports detail the different types of DDoS attacks that exist, such as political protest, ransom and hitting a business rival. It also discusses some possible ways to defend against attacks and motivations for attackers.
The design of the web also means that DDoS attacks often effect other websites as well.
Steve Santorelli, Team Cymru’s director of global outreach, said “The automation of attacks, spoofing and the rise in the number of infected clients available as well as the ease with which HTTP based botnets can be created have all contributed to the evolution in sophistication of DDoS attacks.”
