Russia to Crack Down on Cyber Crime

The Russian Coordination Center, which administers all of Russia’s domain registries (.ru), will begin to verify the identities of registrants starting in April. Businesses and individuals registering a domain name will be required to provide a copy of a passport or legal registration papers.

Russia is widely considered to be a haven for cyber criminals. Most of the cyber criminals operating in Russia do not target individuals inside the country, so police do not have much incentive to actively pursue them.

This new plan comes on the heels of the FSB’s (Russia’s Internal Security Service) arrest of three men involved in a cyber scam that netted around $9 million.
