Journalists’ Email Hacked in China

Earlier this year, search engine giant Google revealed that it had been targeted in a widespread cyber attack that appeared to emanate from China. It now appears that Yahoo has also been targeted, according to the BBC.

The Foreign Correspondents’ Club of China (FCCC) has confirmed that eight email accounts of foreign journalists based in China have been hacked. Yahoo condemned the attacks but the FCCC accused Yahoo of not keeping email users informed of the situation.

“Yahoo has not answered the FCCC’s questions about the attacks, nor has it told individual mail users how the accounts were accessed,” a spokesman said.

Yahoo has released a statement saying the company is “committed to protecting user security and privacy.”

Clifford Coonan, of the Irish Times, told the AFP news agency that his email account presented him with an error message when he logged in.

“I don’t know who’s doing it, what happened. They  haven’t given any information, but it seems to be happening to journalists and academics in China, so that’s why it’s a little suspicious,” he said.
