India Baits Chinese Hackers

Indian cybersecurity professionals have set baited traps to track Chinese hackers attempting to breach Indian government networks, according to a report in The Times of India. The recent “Shadow in the Cloud” report by the Munk Research Center at the University of Toronto, found a number of attacks targeting Indian government networks, including national security information.

However, Indian cyber professionals are already taking steps to trace the threat. Earlier this year, the Indian government reported that it was hit in a series of cyber probes on government networks that appeared to emanate from China. Since that time, Indian cyber warriors have been working tirelessly to monitor their networks and detect cyber probes.

In an effort to trace the attacks, India’s cyber guardians set up traps on targeted servers that would allow them to trace any attacks to the source.

Sachin Pilot, minister of state for IT and telecommunications, said “We need to be extra vigilant about cyber terrorism, because this can inflict attacks of an assymetric nature, and is therefore that much more dangerous.”

According to report, the Indian government efforts have been relatively successful. CERT India has also provided suggestions to guard against the growing threat from cyber espionage.

While India is continuing to prepare defensively, cyber warfare is not yet a central strategic doctrine of its armed forces.

We all know that Chinese military and members of the “party” are attacking the internet. Rest of world needs to unite and blanket China’s military and non military web sites continuouly. United world can make China look in mirror and may be back off?

  2. It’s a little bit insulting that the media is acting like no other nation in the world is involved in spying except the Chinese. Do you really think that American and India are innocent of cyber-spying? Give me a break!

8888, I understand your point. I have actually written an opinion piece in response to your comment. You can view it here:

  4. Highway snipers, pirates  and criminals are also working their way in the Internet.  They alone will rule the world who can win the virtual war of data tracking and information storing in an unbeatable firewall stronghold. With the staggering increase in internet accessing, hackers will pilfer secret information and lay their own conditions for achieving their own secret ends. Another war in the style of Al Quaida  will be launched and another form of counter-attack will have to be devised to protect the Internet highways. Has the war-game not been started already? China is already believed to be the first amongst the toughest of the Internet pirates. Have they not already flagged their warships?
