CIA Director Leon Panetta recently told 300 Sacramento Metro Chamber Cap-to-Cap delegates that a cyber attack could be the next “Pearl Harbor” that the country faces. Panetta said that the U.S. is currently under thousands of attacks daily that come from Russia, China, Iran and non-affiliated hackers and that “cyber terrorism” is an area of concern for the CIA.
“The next Pearl Harbor is likely to be a cyber attacking going after our grid…and that can literally cripple this country,” Panetta said. “This is a whole new area of threat.”
However, cyber terrorism is only one of a number of considerations of the CIA. Counter-terrorism, fighting narcotics trafficking and counter proliferation are other areas of focus for the CIA.
