Congress Needs to Come Together to Plan Cyber Defense says Rep. Sanchez

Rep. Sanchez

There are currently a number of bills before Congress that deal with cybersecurity and multiple committees claim some level of oversight regarding cybersecurity. However, there appears to be little consensus between the different players claiming dominion over cybersecurity.

Rep. Loretta Sanchez, who is the chair of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Subcommittee on Terrorism, Unconventional Threats and Capabilities, believes that all the players in Congress should come together to flesh out a strategy for moving toward enhanced cybersecurity.

“Since I’ve become the chairwoman,” Sanchez told GovInfoSecurity.com. “I’ve asked for the person who handles this on Intel here in the House of Representatives, the person who handles it on Commerce and Energy Committee, the person who handles it on Homeland, the person who handles it on the Appropriations Defense Committee to all sit down with me and have a meeting about what each and everyone of us is worried about, looking at what have done form our end and to see what’s falling between the floor boards.”

We often hear calls for greater collaboration between the public and private sectors and among the disparate players throughout the federal government. If Congressional representatives are able to develop a coherent strategy, it would greatly facilitate any efforts to move towards a national cybersecurity strategy.
