Air Force Receives Influx of 33,000 Cyber Pros

Approximately 30,000 Air Force servicemembers have transitioned into a more cybersecurity-centric profession, and roughly 3,000 former communications officer now have new roles as cyberspace professionals, according to Air Force Times.

The transformation is part of the Air Force’s focus on cyberspace operations and the merger of most computer system operations and network warfare functions under Space Command’s 24th Air Force in Texas. Cyberspace officers will have a dual role of providing support and expertise on how a computer or communication network can improve warfighting capabilities.

Newly commissioned cyberspace officers will attend a 115-day course at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., which will raise the bar on technical competency, said Brig. Gen. David Cotton, director of cyberspace transformation and strategy at the Air Staff.

Airmen will learn how to set up secure networks in the field and how to integrate systems into operations, and about 400 students are expected to attend the class every year. After graduates arrive at their operational units, they will continue to receive on-the-job training and become mission qualified.
