Get Your Botnet Here
Cyber miscreants can now purchase botnets relatively cheaply, according to an article on SiliconIndia. The botnets, a string of infected computers run by a “control server,” allow a purchaser to use the botnet to assail websites and servers and effectively cripple them.
Botnets are often used in distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks that shut down websites by making illegitimate data requests, blocking legitimate users from accessing the website. Some botnets are now on sale for $9 an hour or $67 per day. DDoS attacks can be used to extort money from companies, by attacking their website(s) and then forcing the company to pay money to the criminals for the attack to stop.
“Organizations need to be wary of the fact that their critical online applications or services could be taken down in under a day by a criminal renting services from bot herders,” said Rick Howard, director of intelligence at iDefense.
