Hacker Poses as Bollywood Star, Tells Friends, Business Contacts She’s Pregnant

An Indian actress last week reported to Mumbai cyber crime investigators how a hacker broke into her Gmail account and while posing as her, had numerous online chats with her friends about being pregnant with a guy whose name she failed to remember.

The plot was uncovered when the scammer began chatting to actress Meghna Naidu’s ex-publicist, who sensed something was wrong.

“PRs specialize in understanding the psyche of their clients,” publicist Dale Bhagwagar told Hindustan Times. “I take special efforts and time to comprehend how each client thinks, feels, behaves and talks. This person on chat had a subtle devilish sarcasm, and as I know Meghna, she’s cool and clear, but hardly sarcastic.”

Following the chat, Bhagwagar called Naidu’s residence to check whether she had been on the chat and was told the actress had gone for her yoga class. After Naidu returned the call, she was shocked to learn about the conversation.

“I was paranoid when I checked my Google chats,” she said. “This impostor had been chatting with a lot my friends and claimed I was pregnant out of a fling. To add to this craziness, he wrote I’d forgotten the name of the guy who made me pregnant. All this bogus talk was insane and scary.”

After changing her email privacy settings, she contacted the Mumbai Cyber Crime Investigation Cell, but “sadly and strangely, the cops there didn’t seem to be much interested about my case,” Naidu said.
