Hackers Target IM Apps
Security experts in Germany are warning about a new threat to MSN Messenger and Windows Live Messenger, V3.co.uk reports.
G Data SecurityLabs research noted a recent increase in spam and phishing sites that link to the services, as well as a surge of seemingly never-ending fake friend requests. Adding to these issues is an application that falsely promises to reveal to users who is blocking them.
The messages include links that will take users to a Russian software site that offers products at unrealistically low prices, G Data SecurityLabs warned, with the goal of the scammers to extract personal information and credit-card details from their victims.
Other IM-related threats include a sort of search service that allows IM users see who is blocking them as a contact. Users are asked to provide user names and passwords in return for the information, but in fact all they are doing is handing over their details on request.
