Website Sued for Selling Personal Data

A Washington, D.C.-area resident has filed a lawsuit against a website for allegedly selling personal and financial data about individuals without their consent.

Tom Robins claims that Spokeo.com, a website that allows users to search for an individual by name, phone number or email address, violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) by collecting data from traditional and online sources and then publishing the acquired information, Xinhua reports. The lawsuit claims Spokeo gives searchers consumer reports that can include a person’s marital status, address, occupation, age, credit and wealth level.

Spokeo appears to only use information that is publicly available, according to The Pasadena, a California-based portal. Much of Spokeo’s content is available for free but some requires payment.
