Cyber Camp for NextGen Cyber Warriors

In an effort to develop the next generation of skilled cyber professionals, the Center for Information Assurance, in conjunction with the U.S. Cyber Challenge, the California Office of Information Security, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and the SANS Institute hosted a cyber camp in Calif.

The participants in the four day camp were selected following an online quiz which required California residents. The top 22 scorers were treated to a camp run by the SANS Institute.

“It wasn’t terribly difficult,” Santa Clarita resident Karen Guthery told Daily News. “The quiz engine was vulnerable to be able to generate a perfect score.”

In addition to the training programs, participants also had the opportunity to speak with potential employers. Federal and state agencies, as well as companies in the private sector came to the camp.

The lead camp organizer, Dan Manson, a professor at Cal Poly Pomona, said that cyber awareness is essential for all Americans but is currently lacking.

“We are under constant attack,” he said. “The Internet is a place where anyone can launch an attack. It’s asymmetric warfare, and it can be done by any individual. There’s a tremendous need that we have for cyber professionals. We need to do a better job at identifying these individuals and providing accessible training and instructors for them.”
