Scotland Yard Breaks Up Phishing Ring
Six suspected members of a phishing ring have been arrested in the United Kingdom and Ireland over alleged involvement in a scam hitting tens of thousands of victims.
One woman and five men between the ages of 25 and 40 were arrested in County Meath, Ireland and London after an investigation by the Metropolitan Police Central e-Crime Unit (PCeU). The suspects arrested in the UK were arrested after raids and face possible charges of computer fraud and hacking, according to The Register.
The arrests came as part of Operation Dynamophone follow a sophisticated investigation of phishing fraud networks. Both the MPS Territorial Support Group and the Irish Garda Síochána Fraud Investigation Bureau also assisted in the arrests.
Police say approximately 10,000 credit cards and 10,000 bank accounts have been compromised.
“We have taken this action to shut down an organized criminal network running an online phishing and account take-over operation,” said Detective Inspector Colin Wetherill of the PCeU. “A great deal of personal information was compromised and cleverly exploited for substantial profit. By disrupting the operation we have hopefully prevented further loss to individuals and institutions across the UK.”
