In an effort to raise cybersecurity awareness, authorities in Maine are looking toward a “neighborhood watch” approach.

MyMainePrivacy.org “has been organized to promote the education of cyber crime prevention to the residents and businesses in the state of Maine by increasing public awareness.”

The effort won the Department of Homeland Security’s award for Best Local and Community Plan. The campaign looks “toi dentify and partner with existing local and national privacy awareness campaigns in order to promote privacy awareness by safeguarding personal identifiable information, sensitive data properties and community.”

It includes local plans at libraries and universities, 4-H clubs and the involvement of the Small Business Administration.

The goal is “to reduce undue fear of cyber crime by providing accurate information about risks and by promoting a sense of security and community spirit, particularly amongst the more vulnerable members of the community through voluntary activities and awareness campaigns.”
