Alion’s Mark Ives: Our Cyber Warriors Understand the Threat Across the Enterprise

Mark Ives

In an effort to enhance cybersecurity at Alion Science and Technology Corporation, Chief Information Officer Mark Ives instituted a cyber training program to build a trained cyber workforce that understands the threat across the enterprise, rather than only for individual sections of the company.

The program, called Alion Cyber Warrior Training, approaches cybersecurity from an end-to-end philosophy on fighting cyber attacks.

“We believe that a cyber warrior should be trained to understand the threat end-to-end within the enterprise,” Ives said. “That means our people are trained so that when an attack materializes, they can determine the risk to all portions of the enterprise, not just one section.”

The Alion approach is seen by Ives as the most effective way to stop cyber attacks, and deal with ones that do get through.

“We believe our end-to-end response method is the quickest and most effective means of stopping an attack, understanding the attacker’s purpose and methods, and preventing future attacks of a similar nature,” he said. “We don’t want security functions to hinder business operations. What we have to do, as much as possible, is fold security operations into day-to-day operations in the enterprise.”
