New Phishing Scam Targets Taxpayers

The Internal Revenue Service is warning about a fraudulent scheme targeting those who use the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System.

The scam uses an email claiming the user’s tax payment was rejected and directs the user to a website for additional information. The website contains malware that may infect the user’s computer.

IRS spokesman Dan Boones said the IRS never sends emails about taxes. Individuals who receive this or similar messages are advised not to click any links or submit any information. They should also forward the email immediately to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov.

EFTPS is a tax payment system provided free by the Department of Treasury, allowing  individual or business taxpayers to pay federal taxes online or by phone around the clock.
