Stuxnet Spreads to Finland

Corporate espionage is spreading in Finland, and the Land of the Thousands Lakes was recently targeted by the infamous Stuxnet worm, Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat reports.

The complex malware has been found in at least one institution that uses the industrial equipment targeted by the worm. It has not caused any damage. In addition, Finnish state institutions have also been attacked. According to the Finnish Security Police, spyware has been spreading both through email and via USB flash drives.

Attacks on state services in Finland are not rare. According to a report, 10 percent of state offices were targeted in 2009, primarily by denial of service attacks and data grabs.

F-Secure, which has its corporate headquarters in Helsinki, said Finland has experienced a few dozen cases of cyber snooping on Finnish organizations. However, a chief inspector at the National Bureau of Investigation told Helsingin Sanomat there are probably many more cases, but “[a] large proportion of these cases will never be seen outside the company.”
