World’s Most Expensive Domain Names

Sex sells, especially in cyberspace: According to BBC, the domain name sex.com has just sold for $13 million.

Caribbean company Clover Holdings is behind the multimillion-dollar sex.com bid, BBC reported. The domain was put up for auction in July 2010 when former owner Escom LLC went bankrupt. The sale will only go through if it wins approval from the bankruptcy court overseeing Escom LLC’s affairs.

The price is among the highest ever paid for a domain, according to BBC. In 2006 when Escom bought sex.com, it reportedly paid up to $14 million for it. The highest price ever paid for a domain was $16 million, which marketing company QuinStreet paid for insure.com in 1999.

  • • Diamonds.com: $7.5 million
  • • Slots.com: $5.5 million
  • • Toys.com: $5.1 million
  • • Vodka.com: $3 million
  • • Candy.com: $3 million
  • • CreditCards.com: $2.75 million
  • • Computers.com: $2.1 million
  • • Seniors.com: $1.8 million
