An Italian minister has announced the country will lift restrictions on public Wi-Fi access to the Internet starting next year, according to AFP.

Speaking at a press conference Nov. 5, Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said the measure “allows us to lift restrictions . . . that have now been superseded by technological evolution.”

In 2005, Italy implemented limitations on Wi-Fi access in public places after a series of bomb attacks in London, forcing Wi-Fi providers to require documents proving the identity of users and to track their online activity.

Antonio Palmieri, a lawmaker from the ruling People of Freedom party, said removing the restrictions was “a balanced position that combines requirements for security and for the modernization of Italy,” AFP reported.
