Team Kuwait Hackers Shut Down Israeli Websites
A number of Israeli websites were compromised over the weekend by a group that calls itself Team Kuwait Hackers and claims to be the best hackers in the world.
Debbie Goldsmith, a director at the site Aardvark Israel, told The Jerusalem Post that instead of providing information about gap-year programs in Israel, the site on Saturday displayed “a countdown and a clickable button, accompanied by eerie music. It sounded like Muslim prayers.”
Later the same day, the hackers posted a picture of a Koran and a message saying, “TeaM KuWaiT HaCkErS – HaCkErS eV!L.”
The same hackers also breached the Israel Scouts’ international site last week, according to APR, the company that manages Aardvark Israel’s website.
The Jerusalem Post said Team Kuwait Hackers claimed on Facebook to be “The Best HaCkeRs iN The World.” However, Alex Zilberman of APR said the gang used a simple method to take down the Israeli websites, using search engines to find sites with weaknesses they can exploit. The fact that the sites use open-source code also facilitated the hack, he said.
“Millions of people use open-source codes around the world,” he said, mentioning blogging platforms like LiveJournal and WordPress as examples. He added it is easy for a professional to protect a site against this simple hacking strategy.
