New Yorker Pleads Guilty to Federal Copyright Violations
A New York man has pleaded guilty to violating federal copyright law by uploading a pirated copy of the movie “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” a month before it was released in theaters.
The Justice Department said in a release Gilberto Sanchez, 48, who lives in The Bronx, pleaded guilty to one count of uploading a copyrighted work being prepared for commercial distribution. The felony charge carries a statutory maximum penalty of three years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine or twice the gross gain or gross loss attributable to the offense.
Sanchez admitted he uploaded a “workprint” copy of the copyrighted movie to www.Megaupload.com in March 2009 and then publicized the upload by posting links online so anyone could download it.
Sanchez is scheduled to be sentenced by United States District Judge Margaret M. Morrow on Sept. 19.
