Embezzling Hacker Couple Gets Prison Time

On the heels of the crooked husband-wife team who made $1.5 million off defrauding eBay customer, a judge has sentenced yet another married couple to 18 months in prison for hacking into their employer’s computer and embezzling more than $120,000, according to the Justice Department.

Alabama residents Charles Allen Elliott, 38, and Carol Ann Elliott, 43, were sentenced Tuesday on forgery and computer fraud charges and ordered to pay $120,000 in restitution to DWP Construction and $13,028 to First Commercial Bank. The Elliotts have to serve three years’ supervised release after completing their prison terms.

According to their plea agreement, Charles Elliott worked on contract with DWP Construction to set up its computer network. He recommended his wife for a job, and she was hired as a bookkeeper and secretary. She issued forged checks on DWP’s bank account, and the couple used the proceeds of more than $120,000 for their personal finances.

Between March 2008 and January 2009, Charles Elliott gave his wife passwords and usernames for the company’s computers, which she used to illegally obtain information about the business owner’s activities and possible knowledge of the Elliotts’ embezzlement.
