Top DHS Official Publishes New Document on Cyber Defense
As deputy undersecretary of Homeland Security’s National Protection and Programs Directorate, Philip Reitinger’s daily tasks call on him to protect the government’s computer systems from domestic and foreign threats.
“Unless people start to pay attention to the threat and how we need to drive fundamental change, we’re in a world that is going to get worse from day to day and month to month and year to year,” he said in an interview with GovInfoSecurity.com.
Reitinger and his department published a white paper titled “Enabling Distributed Security in Cyberspace.” The paper introduces three security components that can enhance vulnerability prevention and cyber defense, including authentication, automation and interoperability.
The deputy has years of experience in the cyber-defense industry. At Microsoft, he worked on IT infrastructure and collaborated closely with government agencies and the private sector on cybersecurity protection programs.
Reitinger served as executive director of the Defense Department’s Cybercrime Center and was also deputy chief of the computer crime and intellectual property division at the Justice Department.
