Cyber Crime Rises in Canada

Canada is the new breeding ground for cyber criminals and is experiencing a 319 percent increase in phishing sites, ranking second behind the U.S. in hosting malicious sites, according to the Financial Post.

Senior Security Research Manager for cybersecurity firm Websense Patrik Runald said while the number of servers hosting malicious websites is going down in countries such as the U.S., France, the U.K. and Germany, Canada has seen an uptick.

Websense recently released a report showing a 53 percent increase in bot networks or automated hacking networks. The report also ranked Canada sixth in overall cyber crime, up from 13th in 2010.

The firm launched an investigation into the country’s cyber crime after a hacking took place in two Canadian federal departments. Unable to nail down the criminals, Canada’s top officials aren’t taking this trend of cyber crime lightly. Canada’s privacy commissioner Jennifer Stoddart recently called for her office to fine businesses that allow data security breaches.
