Mexican Bishops’ Website Taken Down by Hackers

The website for the Mexican bishops’ conference was taken offline after being hit by a cyber attack, Catholic News Agency reports.

Commenting on the incident, Paola Rios, director of digital communications for the conference, told CNA the hackers had “damaged the database.” Although all of the information has been retrieved, functionality has yet to be restored, she said.

Rois said the attack appears to be random, and the website is expected to be back online by next week.

“We can’t be unable to communicate; the bishops need to get their messages out,” she told CNA and noted the Mexican bishops will hold their next plenary assembly in three weeks.

Rios said plans to unveil the redesigned site had initially been scheduled for the first or second week of June, but after the cyber attack the department decided to adopt the new design sooner.
