LulzSec Turns Attention to Brazilian Government Websites
The infamous hacker group Lulz Security has taken credit for yet another cyber attack. This time around, the Brazilian government came under attack in the ongoing onslaught of cyber attacks targeting companies and organizations around the world, according to Reuters.
The sites for Brazil’s federal government, presidency and tax collection agency were inaccessible for about two and a half hours overnight, but their operation has since been restored, Gilberto Paganotto, the head of Brazil’s computer data agency, told Reuters.
Paganotto said he was unaware of who was behind the attack, but shortly after the incident, LulzSec tweeted, “Our Brazilian unit is making progress. Well done @LulzSecBrazil, brothers!” shortly after the two sites went down.
The attack on the Brazilian government follows yesterday’s news that London police said they had a suspected LulzSec member in custody, 19-year-old Ryan Cleary.
Responding to news about the arrest, LulzSec did not seem rattled over the announcement of Scotland Yard nabbing a “major player.”
“Clearly the UK police are so desperate to catch us that they’ve gone and arrested someone who is, at best, mildly associated with us. Lame,” the group tweeted.
Later last night, LulzSec took to Twitter again to clarify, “Ryan Cleary is not part of LulzSec; we house one of our many legitimate chatrooms on his IRC server, but that’s it.”
