A Republican senator is calling for the creation of a panel to draft legislation on cybersecurity and electronic intelligence leaks without having to work through numerous — and sometimes competing — committees of jurisdiction, AFP reports.
In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz) cited a need for congressional leadership “on this pressing issue of national security.”
The proposed panel is crucial in developing comprehensive cybersecurity legislation and address the continuous insider threats seen in cases such as WikiLeaks, he said.
“I truly believe the only way to move comprehensive cybersecurity legislation forward swiftly is to have committee chairmen and ranking members step away from preserving their own committees’ jurisdiction in order to develop a bill that serves the national security needs of all Americans,” McCain wrote in his letter.
