Cisco Delivers Compact Routers

Cisco has unveiled the Cisco 819 Integrated Services Router Machine-to-Machine gateway enabling business innovation and productivity by extending corporate network services to billions of non-traditional IP devices.

According to Cisco, this product is a delivery of its vision for the “internet of things.” In integrating network capabilities into non-traditional IP devices, M2M provides a connectivity that can aid organizations in achieving operational efficiency, cost savings and innovation.

“The Internet of Things represents the next evolution of the Internet and has the potential to change the world as we know it today – for the better. In the not too distant future, we’ll transition to a world where your doctor can get instant health results from a patient’s wearable device and everything has an IP address. As we approach a world of 50 billion devices connected to the Internet, technologies that provide an always-on, secure connection, will be key enablers of the Internet of Things,” said David Evans, chief futurist/cheif technology officer, Internet Business Solutions Group, Cisco.

The 819 ISR M2M gateway serves as a single integrated platform extending corporate 3G/4G wireless WAN network services to small devices such as ATMs, service vehicles, vending machines and digital billboards.

Although the router is small and lighter than an Apple MacBook Air, it still supports advanced security features including stateful and application inspection firewall, intrusion prevention, content filtering, and encryption for VPNs. The QoS features optimize voice and video applications in remote sites so end-users experience the same service levels as headquarters would.

Cisco 819 ISR can be remotely managed with Cisco Prime. This along with the support for extensive 3.5G and 3.7G MIBs provides network managers visibility into and control of devices, including devices connected to the router in these remote sites.
