Navy Develops Solar-Powered Vehicle for Disaster Relief
The Naval Sea Systems Command has developed a van that uses solar power for its computers and communications equipment while the vehicle is supporting disaster relief efforts, according to GCN.
The van has a high-frequency radio, high-definition TVs and a satellite phone. The van can receive calls from any nearby cell phone tower through a network interface device.
The Navy had difficulty with providing easily available fuel for its command vans during Hurricane Katrina. The new vans use a photovoltaic solar array and two 1 kilowatt generators. The generators use 16 lithium battery modules to power the van’s systems, according to GCN.
