Lockheed Working to Develop Green UAV

Lockheed Martin and Elbit Systems of America LLC have been working to develop a green hybrid small unmanned aerial vehicle that runs off of renewable energy sources, Military & Aerospace reports.
The request is part of the Air Force’s “Small Unmanned Renewable Energy Long Endurance Vehicle program,” which selected and Elbit in May 2011 to develop and demonstrate the green UAV.
TheAir Force is requiring the UAV be able to:
- Carry a 4-pound electro-optical payload for at least four hours
- Fly at altitudes as high as 25,000 feet in rough conditions
- Land in rough terrain
- Operate in temperatures as cold as 30 degrees below zero
- Operate in winds stronger than 35 knots
- Transportable and operational by one person
- Weigh less than 20 pounds
Lockheed and Elbit have designed a green propulsion system for the aircraft. Lockheed recently won a $1.1 million contract to develop and demonstrate an integrated power system for the UAV, according to Military & Aerospace.
