Raytheon‘s next-generation weather forecasting system is fully operational at the National Weather Service‘s Omaha, Neb. forecast office, Raytheon said Monday.

Raytheon said Omaha is the first of 135 NWS sites that will use the updated Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System.

The AWIPS II system will work with operations that make weather predictions and dispense information about weather conditions. The National Weather Service intends to use the system to better collaborate with other forecast offices, according to Don Berchoff, director of the NWS’ office of science and technology.

Raytheon said the AWIPS II features manipulative user interfaces for multiple applications, including on laptops and servers. The system also features:

  • non-proprietary software
  • visualization capabilities
  • user-configurable pan-and-zoom capability
