The VA has capped the number of authorized Apple devices at 1,000, according to FierceGovernmentIT. During a conference call with reporters, Baker said he expects the VA to award a contract for a secure mobile network in either the first or second quarter of fiscal year 2012. The VA would roll out the system late in the second quarter, Baker said.
An October 2011 post on FedBizOpps says the VA wants the network to handle up to 10,000 devices. The VA would eventually expand the network to 100,000 devices through a “bring your own device” approach.
VA clinicians would benefit the most from having mobile devices at their disposal, Baker said. VA clinicians in the Washington area use “Clinic in Hand,” an Apple application that interfaces with the VA’s medical record system to view and add patient information.
The encrypted app stores no information from health records on the actual device. Mobile devices and tablets would all be encrypted just like the app, Baker said.
